Over half of Florida renters now at risk of eviction.
So says data gleaned from a US Census survey taken in mid-July. The discontinuation of $600 per week federal subsidies for unemployment checks will put at risk of eviction many of the 25 million Americans who are currently receiving those checks. An analysis from global advisory firm Stout Risius Ross estimates that over 40 percent of renter households across the country will experience a rental shortfall during the current crisis, and eviction moratoria across the country are now starting to be lifted. As the map below shows, Florida will be particularly hard hit with 51% of its renters at risk of eviction.

A visit to grandma may be in the offing. Acknowledging the damage created by months of isolation due to Covid-19 safety measures, Governor DeSantis floated the suggestion this week that it may be time to devise a way for vulnerable elders to be reunited with their families in nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout the state. Facilities regularly express concerns over growing instances of loneliness and depression in the population they serve. While speaking with doctors in Orlando, DeSantis put forth the possibility of visitation resuming with the aid of rapid testing. Current tests on the market take a total of 15 minutes and could be required of anyone entering a facility.

The session, which is ongoing late into the evening on Monday, at times was more show than substance with congressional questioners posturing on political bias, slave labor and work with foreign militaries.Today’s hearing could be foreshadowing for the companies who along with Microsoftmakeup over 20% of the value of the S&P 500. Thenext Congress is expected to aggressively pursue antitrust actions in the tech space.
