The Florida GCSA Best Management Practices Certification Program

The Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association is proud to administer the Golf Best Management Practices (BMP) Certification Program.  The Program is intended for golf course superintendents, assistant superintendents, and other industry professionals to demonstrate your understanding and implementation of Golf BMPs for operation and maintenance of Florida golf courses.  The Florida GCSA believes that Florida Superintendents are truly Environmental Stewards and by providing a certified program, we will continue to demonstrate our industry's positive respect and impact on the environment.

Certification in the Golf BMP Certification Program is valid for a period of 4 years.  A superintendent may become recertified by:

·         Attend an upcoming BMP Certification Class.

·         Retake the BMP Certification Exam.

·         Earn 4 CEU’s pertaining to BMP based programs and submit those CEU’s along with a brief description of how those CEU’s apply to Golf Best Management Practices to the Florida GCSA office.

·         Complete the BMP Checklist and submit that to the Florida GCSA office with a brief description of how you are implementing each practice.

The Florida GCSA received the 2015 Excellence in Government Relations Award in recognition of the Golf BMP Certification Program. In addition, our program continues to be the model for other BMP programs across the country.

The Golf BMP Certification Program was developed by the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, United States Golf Association Green Section, and the University of Florida.

Participants receive training using the “Best management Practices for the Enhancement of Environmental Quality on Florida Golf Courses” Handbook including the following:

Environmental Concepts

Environmental Monitoring

Design and Construction

Irrigation

Nutrition and Fertilization

Cultural Practices

Lake and Aquatic Plant Management

Turfgrass Pest Management

Pesticide Management

Maintenance Operations

The certification exam consists of three sections that may be taken together or separately.  Each individual taking the examination must score at least 75% on each section to be considered certified.  All training seminars, including instructors, are coordinated with the Florida GCSA and currently held approximately 4-5 times per year throughout the State.  The exam is administered, proctored and graded by the Florida GCSA.  Certification records are maintained and issued by the Florida GCSA.

The GI-BMPs are a science-based educational program for Green Industry workers (lawn-care and landscape maintenance professionals), brought to you by UF-IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program. The GI-BMPs teach environmentally safe landscaping practices that help conserve and protect Florida’s ground and surface waters. They can also save the Florida homeowner money, time, and effort; increase the beauty of the home landscape; and protect the health of your family, pets, and the environment.

This training is designed to provide corporate, governmental, environmental, and other personnel the Best Management Practices for lawn and landscape.  Florida Statute 482.1562 states that all commercial fertilizer applicators must have a license from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) by January 1, 2014. To get this license, each Green Industry worker must be trained in the GI-BMPs and receive a certificate of completion from UF/IFAS and FDEP. Additionally, many non-commercial Green Industry applicators or other workers are required to pass the training by local ordinances or voluntarily participate in the program to better serve their clients.
